Carolina Shag
The shag is a form of swing dancing that evolved from the jitterbug and originated in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, during the 1940’s. Then it was danced to beach music, which refers to songs that are rhythm and blues (R&B) based, but now the Shag is danced to all types of music. Today, the shag is a recognized dance in national and international dance competitions held across the United States.
Because shag is a type of swing dance, it has a six count (1&2, 3&4, 5, 6) pattern. It is also danced parallel to the partner. It is a very smooth dance. The patterns are simple, but you can do lots of absolutely wild steps. Something that makes the shag different than other dances is that these steps can be done with the man or woman mirroring their partner. The Shag is considered a man’s dance because the man is usually the center of attention and the woman's steps are either mirror steps of the man's or a sort of time to play around while he does spins and other wildness. The shag is the state dance of North Carolina and South Carolina, and is still popular everywhere. (http://bettybbungalow.tripod.com/
